National Beef Association (NBA) questions Miller & Carter’s ‘crass’ promotion of Australian steak
17th September 2021
Region: National
Miller and Carter are a well-known restaurant, with branches throughout the country. They style themselves as 'steak experts', and this week have released a social media advert promoting Australian steak as a premium product.
We have written to Phil Urban, CEO of the Mitchells and Butlers group, who also number Harvester and Toby Carvery - and many other well know high street eateries - in their portfolio. We have expressed concern about the timing of the advert, and at its tone, which implies that the Australian product is a superior one. We have asked him to guarantee the standards and safety of his product, and to look at what British suppliers have to offer.
We accept that there is currently a need to import beef as a requirement to meet consumer demand. However, we would hope that quality steak houses would obtain their premium products from a high standard, home-grown source. We will continue to challenge all organisations, regardless of their size, to source in a responsible and environmentally considered manner, and ensure that nothing enters the UK from a production process which falls below our excellent standards.
