FMD Update 16.45 1st October 2007

1st October 2007

Region: National

FMD UPDATE:  1645 1 OCTOBER  2007: 8 IP~s have been confirmed, 166 report cases negated, 2 cases under review.   IP8 discovered in cattle was young disease and four neighbouring premises have been culled (161 cattle) as dangerous contacts, which were found by the surveillance process.

The FMD risk areas (green area on map) is under constant review and at midnight tonight a number of areas will be reclassified, please check Defra map.

FMD low risk areas  For the rest of GB, store and breeding livestock markets will commence on October 4 in England and Wales, Scotland is still to confirm this.

BTV UPDATE:  There are 19 confirmed cases, 30 cases have been negated, 11 are under investigation.   Two zones are in place, the Control Zone where the infected cases have been found and the wider Protection Zone (150k) to contain the disease.   The zones were established by reviewing the wind bloom which could carry the infected midge.

There is no movement of cattle permitted outside the zones.  Cattle can move to markets and abattoirs within the zones only.    There is very limited slaughter capacity in the BTV zones and the NBA is pushing hard for licences to be issued as soon as possible to allow movement of finished cattle to abattoirs outside the PZ.

Defra are looking at a number of options to ease the pressure in the BTV zones:

a. extend the zone

b. creat more slaughter capacity

c. Issue a slaughter licence to allow cattle to move to abattoirs on the edge of the boundaries under very strict bio-security measures.

Defra stated decisions on movements outside the BTV zones will take some time because the zones will have to be in place for 18 months and time is needed to think through sensible solutions.   (NBA will contest this strongly as there is an urgent need to get movement to slaughter now).

Shows and dispersal sales:  No decision on these have been reached yet.
